National Homebrew Day – Zoom meet up and group brew

On the 2nd of May around 10 of us met up on Zoom to brew a beer in honour of National Homebrew Day – officially May 7th. The “Nation” in the title actually refers to America, where the event was made official by Congress in 1988 to celebrate the contribution of beer to America’s culture. Many of the Founding Fathers were themselves avid beer brewers, and notes describing George Washington’s Small Beer recipe from 1757 were discovered fairly recently. The day is now celebrated in many countries around the world and has now taken on the title of “International Homebrew Day” in many articles referring to the event.

A diverse selection of RAB home brewing kit was fired up for National Homebrew Day – with All-In-One systems, 3-pot set ups and BIAB all being utilised to great effect – not to mention every size and shape of fermenter being filled up with sweet wort at the end

The day is celebrated in very much the way you’d expect, homebrewers around the world brew a beer, while undoubtedly partaking in a few at the same time. Owing to the social distancing and lock-down rules currently in place, RAB hosted a group Zoom meet up such that we could celebrate the event as a group – chatting while making great beer – and a wide array of different beers were brewed! One such recipe brewed by a few of us was the ‘All Together IPA’ – a recipe created by New York’s ‘Other Half’ to generate money to support hospitality professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic (see link below to the recipe and full details of the project). There was also a “clone” of Jerry’s Saison recipe as entered into the recent RAB Sabro competition, with only a few changes made (significant overhauls to grain bill, hops, yeast and malt, probably water too – but it was definitely still a clone… right Daren?). We also had a Czech Dark lager, and a few IPAs, pale ales and others beginning their journey from grain to glass.

The ‘All Together’ IPA was designed by Other Half brewing (NY) as part of a world-wide collaborative project to generate money to support the hospitality sector which was badly hit by the COVID-19 lock-downs

The day was a total success, and there has been a steady stream of images on the group WhatsApp chat as the beers have made their way through the fermentation process and into the glass. A fun event which we hope to replicate in person post-lockdown!

    Keep Calm and Brew On.

  • Spruce Beer Part 2: Brewing With Spruce Tips

With the single largest haul of spruce tips ever collected by 6 amateur brewers in a single afternoon (probably – don’t expect me to fact check such claims), JD and the rest of the Wild Weather gang got to work and brewed up a storm while we went back to our day jobs.

The end result was two beers. Firstly, Spruce Almighty – the UKs first ever spruce tip DIPA which used a massive 12 g/l of spruce tips. And secondly, Sprucie Bonus – a red ale containing approximately 4 g/l of spruce tips.

Rather than just regurgitate facts JD gave us about spruce tips (did you know that they contain more vitamin C than oranges?) or about the brew day itself, I thought it would be more entertaining to point you in the direction of our friends Mike and Cal over at By The Mash Tun who recorded an episode with JD and Iain on the Sprucie Bonus brewday.

    Enjoy!

  • Brewday at Elusive Brewing

On the 2nd of June Alan, Daren and Jerry headed to Finchampstead to brew our Brew Con Community Brew Entry with the nicest man in beer – Andy Parker of Elusive Brewing.

Given Andy well publicised love of black IPAs and the fact that several other clubs were brewing various IPAs, this seemed the obvious choice and so Flashback Black IPA was born (#BIPACOMEBACK).

Of course we also took this opportunity to pop across to Siren’s Tap Yard for some tasty food from Spud Station and a cheeky Calypso after we had finished.

The recipe for a 20 l batch was:

    Water profile:
    Ca 90 ppm
    Mg 7 ppm
    Na 45 ppm
    CO3 90 ppm
    SO4 75 ppm
    Cl 100 ppm
    HCO3 110 ppm

    Grain Bill:
    80% Pale malt
    8% Rye
    4% Midnight wheat
    4% Dark crystal
    4% Chocolate (mash cap)

    Target OG = 1.062

    Mash Temp: 66˚C

    Hops:
    20 g Herkules – 60 mins
    25 g Simcoe – 15 mins
    75 g Simcoe – whirlpool
    100 g Citra – dry hop
    100 g Mosaic – dry hop

    Yeast:
    WLP001

Thanks to Andy for having us down at the brewery.
